How to check headlight compatibility
What must match before a used headlight can be considered compatible?
Confirm the exact OEM number, side, light technology, beam specification, connectors, modules, equipment and mounting points.
SHORT ANSWER
A matching model and shape are only the first two checks
A compatible headlight must match the vehicle application and the assembly specification. Verify: complete OEM number; left or right side; halogen, xenon/HID or LED technology; adaptive or static function; right-hand-traffic or left-hand-traffic beam; pre-facelift or facelift body; connector and pin layout; included control units and undamaged mounting points.
THE EIGHT-POINT CHECK
Write the specification down before searching
- Copy the full OEM number and suffix.
- Confirm left/right from the catalogue, not only from the photograph.
- Identify halogen, xenon/HID, LED or matrix technology.
- Check adaptive/cornering/high-beam-assist functions.
- Confirm LHD/RHD or right-/left-hand-traffic beam specification.
- Check production range and facelift status.
- Compare every connector, module location and pin count.
- Inspect all mounting tabs, lens, housing and rear covers.
Volkswagen headlight 5K0941754B is catalogued as right-side, HID and directional-beam equipment. “Right Golf headlight” leaves two decisive specifications unverified.
OPTICS AND CONTROL UNITS
The housing can fit while the light pattern or electronics do not
European low-beam units are manufactured in different traffic-direction versions. HELLA publishes distinct part numbers for right-hand-traffic and left-hand-traffic modules. Modern lamps may also need ballasts, LED drivers, levelling modules or coding after installation.
Ask whether modules are included, whether the donor unit stored faults and whether the workshop can transfer, initialise or code the relevant electronics.
HELLA R80 uses 1B0 015 050-001 for right-hand traffic and 1M0 015 050-011 for left-hand traffic. Similar dimensions do not make those optical versions interchangeable.
USED-UNIT INSPECTION
Examine sealing and mounting before installation
Zoom in on every mounting ear. Look for plastic welding, missing tabs, broken adjusters, cracks around rear covers, moisture tracks and damaged connector locks. Check that vents are present and unobstructed. A clear lens does not prove that the housing is dry or the aim can be adjusted.
For Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and other brands, use the manufacturer repair procedure for aiming and calibration after fitting.
